Default 2000 F4 Overheats, Sputters and dies

So i just recently picked up this 2000 F4. The guy that had it before me had no respect for it. He crashed it and didn't know how to fix it. Brought her home in peices and I've already done a lot of work on her. She runs perfectly! until she gets hot (about 3/4 to red line) Fan kicks on, coolant is topped up but she sputters and dies when stopped. If i rev to get the RPM over 2 grand, she stays running.

I checked my fuses, everything is fine in that department. I'm not sure what else to check...any one else have this problem?

its hard to say with it being damaged. But I would first inspect the water pump to make sure its working. You may not have any coolant circulating. Also, you may even just have some air trapped in the cooling system preventing the coolant from flowing. you may have to purge the system to get out all of the air.

If the bike is getting so hot that it is shutting off, its not good. I would try to make sure the cooling system is working properly before letting it get hot too many times. If there is air in the system, chances are pretty good the sending unit for the temp gauge is not even in the coolant, and the bike is probably hotter than what is indicated.

If all checks ok, you may have an issue with the ignition somewhere. Its pretty common for coils to act up when they get hot. I'd pull them and do a resistance check to make sure they are within spec.

Also, are you just running the bike at a stand still? If so, its not a good idea to keep the bike running for a long time without airflow. Try putting a fan in front of the bike if you are running it. the cooling system on these bikes are very small, and need air flow to work properly.

Check your valves. They may be too tight from seeing redline too many times.

i just had a similar problem with my 02 4fi. i went througt the bike to check everything. at a high rpm it ran great. when i came to a stop, it would die out on me. now with it being mistreated like you say there could be anohter problem, but i would check the fuel pressure regulator also. my bike was overheating and stalling at low rpms. it was dieing unless i stayed on the throttle and once it died i would have to open the throttle up just to start it up. but as soon as i would crank it up and get going it ran just fine. i replaced the fuel pressure regulator and now it runs like it should.

Thanks man, Yea a couple of my buddies said the same thing. I'm in the midst of doing that right now. Trying to locate the water pump....where would it be? Have the fairings off and the Air ducts.

For the ignition, thats been done the first couple days of putting her back together, she wouldn't even turn over. Got a new ECU and Ignition.

Nope, not doing that. Rather not mess it up anymore then it is.

You know this sounds like the infamous Regulator/Rectifier problem of the F4s
My bike ran great when cool, ****ty when hot (even on a cool night)

Best thing you can do is get a beefed up R/R
http://www.regulatorrectifier.com/ca...ator-Rectifier

This is what I got and it solved the problem you described 100% (fan still comes on, but bike does not sputter, idle is rock solid at 1300 when temps are near 3/4 (well 2/3s really... Redline Water wetter doesn't hurt either, especially if u live at a place where its relatively warm, i think do a 30/60/10 for coolant, water, and water wetter)
