Default 1996 CBR900RR clutch problem

Hello everyone,

I'm having a problem with my CBR that I hope somebody can shed some light on. I bought the bike a couple years ago with 23,000 miles on it. It has been wrecked and repaired at some point. My problem is with the clutch. I am unable to get it adjusted properly. The bike has a new cable and friction disks. When the pressure plate is installed, I am able to slide the clutch lifter pin about 1/8" or so back and forth. The previous owner had stuck a couple of washers between the clutch lifter and the pressure plate bearing to try to correct the problem. My service manual and the clutch diagram on bikebandit.com are both showing that there is not supposed to be a washer in that location. I'm no expert on bikes, but I'm guessing that the clutch lifter is supposed to sit firmly against the pressure plate bearing, with no play. The only thing I can think of is that the either the pressure plate, bearing, or clutch lifter is the wrong part, maybe from a different year bike. Any ideas? Thanks.
