Default ~ Weird Surprise: How did this happen - Anyone? ~

Hi Guys,

I've been riding my bike quite regularly for last 3 months (since I bought it). I've experienced the Fi light come ON a few times before. I'd shut the bike Off, restart...and it would go away. Then it won't come back for weeks....

Last night after getting off work, when I turned it ON, the bike had about 800 RPM idle speed.....very low. I always warm it up before I ride it. So I let it idle for a while. The RPM wouldn't go up. I yanked the throttle, and let go. It would go back to 700-800, barely running....and then the Fi light comes ON. I turned the bike OFF and ON (like I've done in the past). But this time it won't go away. I had no choice but to ride it home anyway. Once I was home (15 miles ride) It was acting normal. I switched it (Off/On) the light disappeared and the RMP's were normal during idle (1200 or so). What's the cause for all this - Anyone? Please help me .

Thanks in Advance!

Nobody...? Anybody....?!

P.S: It's a 2005 F4i, with 25K miles. Bought it when it had 22.5K miles. Had new oil change done 2K ago.

Is the FI light blinking in a pattern? That will tell you the fault code and then you'll be able to focus on a specific problem. Each long blink = 10 and each short blink = 1. For instance, three long blinks followed by 4 short blinks is fault code 34.

the FI light will stay on if the engine is running. so turn your key to on and count the number of blinks.
you may have some loose connections.

If the light is on it will tell you where to start looking for the problem.

It does not blink. It stays ON...

Secondly, Why was my RPM's so Low? It was so low, I could hardly hear the engine running, or seemed like it was going to shut off. Very low RPM during idle...I don't get it.

You have to connect some pins to make the FI light blink and tell you the code, it doesn't do it by itself. It stays on to tell you there is a code stored and for you to retrieve it. You really should download the shop manual.

I don't know how to read codes...etc. The engine seemed like it was bogged down........................The LOW Rpms, and even giving gas seemed like there was a little hesitation in power...etc.

So, yesterday I added a little Techron by Chevron that I had home, for my cars. Seems it fixed the problem. I am not sure if car products are compatible with bikes. But it seemed like it needed a fuel injector cleaner.......I DON'T know why I though of it... But I randomly add it to my cars to keep 'em running clean. I do use quality gas only in the cars and bike (76, Shell, and Chevron only). I also alternate between 87 and 91 Octane... Not sure which to go with.

Any ideas....? Thanks!

well here is my idea, read the code, and put 86-87 octane in the bike only.
and also i recommend not using shell, they charge way to much, and they have that advertisement crap at their pumps.
thats insulting, you are paying more to get some BLAH BLAH BLAH SUPER LOUD crap blown in your ears when getting fuel.
here is how to read the code according to the service manual.

place the motorcycle on its side stand.
start the engine and let it idle. if the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) does not light
or blink, the system has no memory of problem data. if the malfunction indicator blinks, note how many times the MIL blinks, and determine the cause of the
problem (page 5-10 through 5-49).
If you wish to read the PGM-GI memory for trouble data, perform the following
Turn the ignition switch to "OFF".
remove the seat, Short the PGM-FI system service check connector terminals using a jumper wire.
turn the ignition switch to "ON" and the engine stop switch to "RUN"
If the ECM has no self diagnosis memory data, the MIL will illuminate, when you turn the switch to "ON"
If the ECM has self diagnosis memory data, the MIL will start blinking when you turn the ignition switch to "ON"
note how many times the MIL blinks, and determine the cause of the problem (page 5-10 through 5-49).

and whatever you do, don't start pulling the jumper wire out while getting the code, you do something very similar to that to clear the stored codes
edit: for real though man, the seat is extremely easy to remove, its just 2 10mm bolts at the rear corners,
pull the seat up at the corners and you see them, then go download the service manual so you can see pictures. CHAPTER 5

Wild guess: Map sensor vacuum tube, check both ends, also check the 2 tubes that should be connected to the underside of the tank ( above the cct ).

Any of these will result in the symptoms you described, and will also happen randomly.
