Default vortex aluminum frame sliders

I've done the search on frame sliders and everyone says vortex are the best. I am curious if anyone has experience with there aluminum frame sliders as opposed to the plastic ones. My bike is silver and red and I am sure the red plastic frame slider will not match the paint, so I figure I can paint the aluminum to match. Any thoughts on the protection value of the aluminum vs plastic? Has anyone gone down with aluminums? How did they hold up?

anything metal has the tendency to catch on pavement and thus may flip the bike causing more damage
