Default Valve/compression check

Forgive me guys if this has been done before, but is there any way to tell if a F4i has a valve/timing issue WITHOUT doing a compression check? I know the compression check must be done at 16000 miles, but I am broke and my mechanic skills are minimal at best (oil change, spark plugs, and tire change is the best I can do). I am at 17K plus miles and everything else with the bike checks out clean. The only thing that bugs me is low idling after the warm up period, but throttle response and horse power are fine.

thanks,
-Kevin

I've done a compression check on a car, and if you can do a spark plug change, then this should be no problem. Just remove one spark plug at a time and screw in compression gauge (rented from autozone). Remove fuse for fuel, and crank a few times. Write down readings.

Now, how you access the spark plugs on this bike, I have no idea, im a bike noob.

The plugs on the f4i are a pain in the *** compared to what I'm used to, but if you can do that then you can certainly do a compression check. the tool just threads into the spark plug hole. I need to do a compression check and valve adjustment as well...its just a matter of getting around to it...
