Yes. Sharpie ink makes a great color filter.

hmm. may have to consider that. any ideas of the longevity of that tho? i really dont want it to look good for a few weeks, then crap and i have to pull the whole thing apart to sharpie the needle again..ya know?

It'll be good for a long time. Just make sure you get nice even coats the first time. I've used it to color flashlight lenses red before for predator hunting but it's usually pretty streaky (doesn't need to look good to kill a coyote) but the needle is small enough that if you work it smoothly You'll never know the difference.
