Generally speaking you get better service and info going to small shops run by riders, not salesmen. I know where I am that the small outfits that build race bikes and other off the beaten path bikes are far more knowledgeable and honest. I unfortunately don't know anything about shops in your area.

No, the rotors don't have to come off.

Roll the wheel into a good, busy shop and they can change a tire between donut bites on a coffee break.

I would also say go to a shop that has less overhead, less workes and are riders themselves (and not the "I ride when I get time type of riders). I live in Philadelphia and there is not a large variety of bike shops around here and the small private shops are usually a good place to go. I look for honesty the most for whenever I have a problem and need to get something addressed.

From what I have observed, all bike shops can be expensive and some of the larger shops may not want you to bring your own parts, but the smaller shops usually don't care. Larger shops mostly cost more than smaller shops. Since your in CA, you shouldn't have too much of a problem finding a good bike shop because I'm sure they are plentiful all over.

If you are on a budget, a good thing to do is find out what the suggested retail price is for some tires that you may be interested in, then find out what the under retail price may be, then see what some shops charge. A lot of shops will probably sell you the tire and mount/balance all in one price and that sometimes can be a good deal. But if you bring your own tire, they can charge you up for mount/balance because they know you need that done.

Good luck!
