You can take a large screwdriver and drive it through the middle of the filter and use it as leverage to turn it. Make sure you are turning in the correct direction (leftie). This is to be considered a LAST RESORT action.

this might sound ridiculous but if your strapped for tools i once used my belt to easily get the filter off. just pull it through and wrap it around the filter-with the right leverage you can pull down on the belt so that there is enough force for it to turn. just get your hand other hand on there and twist and it should come loose. careful not to be jerky though, you have to be a little delicate........im not advocating this, i just did it once and it worked.
