Default tips to get off stuck oil filter?

hey guys, so im doing my first oil change since i got my f4i, and the oil filter is stuck. i've tried using the wrench thing that attaches to the end of a socket wrench, but no luck. the last owner must have put it on too tight. should i just take it in somewhere to get it taken off?

Get yourself one of these....you might be able to find it at sears, if not a one of your local auto parts stores should have it.

It will do the job, also, just make sure you put the oil filter back on hand tight, not with the wrench.

You can take a large screwdriver and drive it through the middle of the filter and use it as leverage to turn it. Make sure you are turning in the correct direction (leftie). This is to be considered a LAST RESORT action.

[sm=exactly.gif] that's what I've always done when I come upon an oil filter that seems like king kong himself put on

The first time I changed mine after having it done at the dealership, it took a couple hours, breaking a craftsman strap wrench, and some good swearing. The thing that finally did it for me though was the free replacement strap wrench I got (since it wasa craftsman), and some good sized channel locks

I've had some luck with a strap wrench before but it dented up the filter pretty good

Last filter req'd a screwdriver. It's messy. I used something to pierce the filter and drain the oil. If you can get it off w/o puncturing the filter, do it.

Get some giant channel lock pliers. With them one size fits all. You might crush the filter a little but it won't make a mess like punching a hole in it. Plus you can come at it from different angles depending on how hard it is to get to.
Mine are about 12 inches in length maybe a little more. They open wide enough to put a grapefruit in. I've usedthem for every oil change I've done for the last 10+ years. Plus they come in handy for other projects where you don't have a large enoughwrench.

I always put the filter on hand tight as hard as I can and have never had one leak.
