Kuro has it dead on the nuts. It all comes down to the rider. I have seen a z06 get spanked by a escort wagon with a klze swap in it. No different with bikes. I have heard of guy's on 250 ninja's pulling away in the corners with guys that had 600cc bikes. Talent isn't bought, it has to be earned.

Just to add something else: my 06 F4i's shifting is fairly smooth (or I can make it that way with concentration). And my friend's 07 RR was clunky (before it got totalled).
Some of the clunky transmission is rider / bike maintenance / fluids used I suspect. Cause mine got smooth as glass 90% of the time when the weather got colder, strangely (Rotella T6 in Ororo)

I agree…every gearbox is going to act/perform differently due to maintenance of oil, current oil viscosity and degradation level as well as the components themselves being thrashed or not. Cold versus warm versus hot temps also contribute.
I admit, as should anyone, when I was just learning how to shift, it was loud and not perfect, and I am not even saying I am anywhere near perfect now..but I can say that I honestly shift pretty dang good and understand the concept of how the gearbox/shifter works (e.g matching road speed/engine speed (rpm) to the appropriate gear and whatnot) and as a general statement..I can honestly say that the F4i’s gearbox is by design, notoriously louder and “clunkier” than a 2007 RR’s. It is simply a fact due to the closer tolerances and undercut teeth of the newer models design!!!!!!!!
From what I’ve gathered…the earlier year F4i’s (2001-2003) have the noisiest, longest throw gearboxes of the bunch. Think about it…it makes sense…what was the technology like in 2001 versus 2007 or even 2004/5/6…? I haven’t read a single thing about a 2001 or early model F4i having a 2007-like gearbox even with a pro-star shift kit…..Is the 2001 F4i’s gearbox going to last just as long???? Probably ; ) Seems its record proves so!

Some times tighter clearances aren't the greatest. That mean's any kind of wear it might fall out of spec faster vs one that is more relaxed. Example would be a Honda B16 motor compared to a small block 350.

im sry....but u r way to obssesed with the gearbox man. i just dont want people to get the wrong idea when they search and read this thread, YOUR f4i has a clunky gearbox-i dont know why. but dont say that ALL f4is have clunky gearboxes all the time. my f4i and rr both shift very smooth. and my f4i isnt brand new. the rr is however. and also, u want some play when it comes to tolerances shifting gears...or else its gonna be retarded hard to get those gears to mate up, especially without grinding. my f4i and rr shift the same, and i would never consider it clunky-same with my other 3 friends that own f4i's, of all years. mine was an 04, and my friends have 01, 02, and 03. and ALL years engines of the f4i are interchangable, so they should all be exactly the same

If you honestly believe that your F4i and 07+ RR's gearbox (Yes it is a huge difference from the RR's prior yrs gearbox 03-06) shift identical then Im not sure what to tell you...

"Honda gearboxes on early models are known to be a bit clunky, they are just like that and it’s not a fault."

600F4inoober, I don't believe you've got the experience to fully critique bike performance. You're been riding street since May, correct? And your experience is a CR80, your bike and a test ride on an RR (with maybe a borrowed ride here and there)?
I'm not qualified to critique any bikes but mine (Rain and Ororo). Because I ride them regularly. I do know I started out clunky as chit on my F3. And now, when I'm not riding lazy, I shift smoothly through my F4i's gears. And before I put her up for the winter, she was shifting smooth even when I was riding lazy.
You rode a RR and liked it. Great. But there are people here who have been riding longer than you, whose bikes / riding style yields a completely different riding experience. And right now you're painting 6 years of F4is with a very wide, messy paintbrush when you say things like
