temperature jumping around
so I was on the freeway going about 60-65 at about 5500 rpmsand my bike normally stays at 185F to maybe 188F but it was hitting like 190-1905F and this was in the morning going to work so it was maybe 65 degrees out give or take a few degrees but it didnt seem normal to me, it kept jumping from 180 then back up then down to 185 then up again.... it even hit 200 a couple times, what could cause this? I flushed the coolant a few months ago, and checked the level last night it was full. maybe about time for a thermostat? My bikes a 01 with 27k on it.

RE: temperature jumping around
read that poast allready... I know my bike, I've had it 2 yrsand I know when something is not normal, its not acting normal, I got home left my bike on, put the kick stand down, took my gloves off, got my keys out, unlocked the door, opened the garage jumped on the bike looked down and the temp gauge is at 250 flashing along with the oil and temperature lights on the speedo, never even knew that light was there....

RE: temperature jumping around
try flushing again...i've had this same issue and this is where it gets funky...i've replaced every sensor and also flushed and replaced t-stat...replaced water pump, tried different fluids...while it no longer jumps around it still does ride a bit hot, but never to overheating and lights like you've said.
then about a month ago, i was just searching on the net...and i found this one dude who had the same problem with the F4i...he couldn't figure it out for about 1 year or more...so i searched his name in the forum to all of his posts...well...one came up about the solution...it all went away when he swapped out the fuel pump! WTH? i don't understand how that would make a difference...but you know what? mine started doing this jumping around thing when i took off the fuel pump to change the fuel filter...interesting isn't it?
so...when all this was going on, with the lights flashing, etc...did the coolant ever boil over? if not, then you'd want to check to see if the temp gauge is actually reading correctly. i think you may have an air bubble trapped right at the t-stat...right below it is where the temp sensor sits.
