I haven't done is personally but I hear the play-doh method works well. You take of the fairing off and put play doh in the general area of where the end bolt it and place the fairing back on and the bolt make an impression in the doh which basically is the center of the slider. I think i read all this in the how- to section of the forum.

The Play-Doh method will work better if you cut through the foam first. Othewise, the stuff doesn't stick that well. I used a couple of other methods.

The simplest was to remove the fairing and the engine bolt, run in the slider bolt and use a level to find an exact plumb spot on the floor from the center of the bolt to a point on the floor. (Bike needs to be on a paddock stand for this.) Stick a piece of tape at that point, then measure up the side ofthe level to the center of the bolt to give you your second reference point.

Pop the faring back on, put the level on the mark and measure upthere's your drill point. Taping the outside of the fairing will give a cleaner hole. Use painter's masking tape.

Second method is to use a laser level with spot setting. Again, remove the fairing, put the slider bolt in and set the laser level mark on the center of the bolt. Reintall the fairing to mark it.

Last, I tried constructing a little stand that's essentially a portable probe. Used a threaded rod clamped to a shop stand as the probe. That worked ok, too. Best method for me was the level.

I used to have a f4i and drilled holes for the sliders myself. I took the fairing off and just put the new longer slider bolt in the engine head where it will go then lined the fairing up against with just the foam then took the hole saw and lined it up with the imprint. Make sure to put electric tape on outside of fairing and drill from the inside. The tape works awesome and leaves no marks. Then some very fine sand paper to get rid of plastis chards.
