+1 on the Fuel Pressure Regulator.
My symptoms were:smelled of gas and when it was hot I had to give it a little throttle to start it.
I bought my part from bikebandit dot com. $62 plus $3 for the gasket.

I have an 01 running rich for some reason too. it has Full exhaust PC3 with the right fuel map from dynojet. I actually backfire and shoot flames :-/

If its rich it will burn your eyes,if its LEAN it will SMELL rich.. aka not burn your eyes.
Get it dynoed to know EXACTLY what it is.
