Default replacing ignition switch??

just wondering if anyone knows exactly where the pigtail end of the ignition cylinder plugs into? someone was nice enough to try to steal my bike and they jammed a screwdriver into the ignition switch and damaged it. i found someone selling a used ignition but the local shop wants to charge 3 hours of labor to install it? This seems a bit high to me. Is it anything i can do myself?

Any guidance would be helpful.

Thanks!

Jade

This forum is a great help on many topics but people are usually reluctant to give out info that can aid in stealing a bike... [X(] like ignition switch replacement. I think you need to take proof of ownership to dealer before they'll do it for you anyway. Try to look for other dealerships! 3 hours seems pretty steep

yes you can do it yourself and yes it only takes about 30-45 minutes and mostly because thats taking off the fairings. watch out for the "one time" screws .. other then that you will be fine to do it yourself

Get a manual and do it yourself, careful not to strip the aluminum bolts holding the ignition to the triple, they are weak!

thanks. i think i'm going to try to get other dealer quotes on how long it will take. i'd like to have the dealer do it just so i don't have to mess with it. and i think they believe that it's mine since i have an insurance policy on it. state farm is actually going to total the bike but the payment will go straight to the lienholder. i'm going to retain it at salvage value which leaves me with the problem of getting the bike running again.

where does the pigtail plug in? do i need to take the gas tank off?

Check with a local LockSmith on installing the switch. Also have them rekey the switch to your current key that works ur gascap and ur trunk. I'm sure they are cheaper then the dealer any day of the week. I did locksmithing for a few years, i should know, hehe...=-)

PS: I own 4 bikes and the same key works every one of them, LMAO. I got tired of hunting my ekys down every time i decided to ride one of my other bikes. Damn life is so much easier now....=-)
