As for retracting it before you remove it... yeah, BS. And yes, when you install the new one, when everything is all bolted up just pull out the stopping piece. but don't forget to replace the bolt in the end after you pull out the stop piece.
It's really not a hard process, you'll be glad you didn't waste the money taking it to the dealer. Good luck

Well, I've managed to do it. I replaced the CCTL with a new one, which has stopped the rattle.
As for being easy, well that depends on your idea of easy! For me I had to take the tank, side fairing panels and throttle bodies off just to get to it!
Luckily we were doing the 16K valve check at the same time, so it was worthwhile.
Initially, I planned to remove the old one, and try flaring the pin, then if that didn't work replace with a new one. After getting in there to take it off, we decided that there's no way we wanted to go there again in the near future, and luckily the local dealer had a new CCTL in stock, so we just replaced it. The new one's going to be there until either 32K, or 48K as well!
Right old pavlova it was!
