Removing the lock from the gas cap
I got mine powdercoated as a whole, it works fine.
I've done a minor re-keying on my gascap lock - When I bought my bike it had a different key (Completely different) - I wound up disassembling the whole gascap after my local locksmith said it couldn't be done.
Unfortunately I'm having troubles with getting my pictures on my FTP site, so I'll just describe how it's done.
1. - Remove the cap from the tank (I'm sure you figured that one out already =-) - Remove your key (You have to press the collar down (By the rubber gasket) to let the latches pop out and the key will turn)
2. - Remove the metal ring UNDER the rubber seal (You'll have to pry it out with a screwdriver - get it started, then it will roll out - you may bend it a little, it's easy to re-bend back.
3. - Remove the 3 screws that hold the bottom 1/2 of the cap in place (You'll have to pry back the rubber gasket to get to them.
4. - Remove the lower half of the cap (The latches, collar, rubber piece will all come off the top cover.
5. - Powder coat as you like (The key cover will come out too if you like).
6. - Reassemble - Most things easily go back where they were, however I had a TERRIBLE time getting that last little metal ring back in place (See step 2). - It can be done, takes a couple of flat screwdrivers.
If you need to rekey the lock - after you have the bottom half out, you'll have to put the key in and turn it 1/4 (Pulls the latches back in). The lock cylinder will come out with the key - then you can re-arrange/remove the tumblers if you need it rekeyed like I did.
Good luck!
