Really dumb question.. How do you use the trip meter?

Default Really dumb question.. How do you use the trip meter?
02 F4i.. how do I use it? I messed with the buttons for a second.. figured out how to swap between MPH/ KMPH... and look at both trips.. but thats it...

Got one at home.. on my computer. Which is not where I am

I think I did that.. but it doesnt count up?
