Default trip meter

was thinking of buying a yamaha ybr125, 1st bike got stolen, this may be my 2nd bike so not a lot of experience, on the photo of the bikes clock, it shows the mileage as only 200 miles, but the trip meter is showing 400 miles. i have questioned the seller by email, and they tell me the trip meter goes backward, i thought you zero a trip meter, and then it goes forward, however this one, clicks forward, they said it happened while washing it, and then the mileage goes backward, i am a novice, so i put the question out there....are they telling the truth, or has this bike been clocked.....

Sounds fishy. Even if the trip meter ran backward and the bike only had 200 actual miles the trip meter would not be showing 400 miles.

If it really does have just 200 miles on it the bike should be pristine and spotless, no wear on the grips or anywhere else and look almost like it was just wheeled off the showroom floor. You can tell if it has significantly more miles on it than that by looking it over closely. Check the exhaust for any signs of getting hot and paint discoloration near the engine. There won't be much/any if it only has been ridden for 200 miles.

actually, looks like i got it wrong having read the sellers email, says you can click the clock forward anywhere between 0 and 999 miles, and then the mileage will go forward as you drive, eg, you can click the clock to 500 miles, then drive it when it will record mileage from 500 miles.....why you would want to do this, i cant think, must be a yamaha thing, bike is being sold long way away, so cant really see it... unless i commit on auction.

No that sounds like the trip-odometer on my F2. When I fill up, I have to use the little **** on the side to set it back to 0. as you turn it, first the 1st digit rotates around til the 9 catches the nect digit, then they both show 99then you trun it more and those 2 catch the 3rd digit and you rotate all 3 9's until it clicks all 3 rows over to 000. So yeah - you could click it one or 2 times and end up showing int he ~400 mile range.
