Default The real way to retrieve codes

Does anyone know the right way to get the FI light codes. I've looked on here a little bit some people say jump the wire under the seat some say just turn on the ignition. My light comes on randomly on highway bike runs normal light stays on. Speedo reads 0. Speed eventually returns. If I turn the bike off then on light shuts off doesn't blink at all until the next random time it comes on again normally if I'm getting on it hard

Got to do both, jump the connector then turn on the ignition and count the blinks. Somebody just put up the list of codes the other day I don't have it handy though.
