Default Oil Filter change without removing fairings

Yes its possible and I did it yesterday without using an extender or anything fancy. My oil filter was on too tight by whoever changed it last.
(I used Shell Rotella T6 5W40 and Purolator 14610 oil filter, thanks to everyone on the other oil and oil filter topic here)

I used a Pennzoil Oil Filter Cap Wrench ($4 from Meijer) part #19902 (it has a C written on it) It has a bolt on the end as well as a 3/8 inch square hole in the bolt to use a ratchet wrench.
And a Stanley 85-891 3/8 inch drive Round Head Ratchet ($7 from Meijer) which is a a little less than 8 inches long and will fit inside the fairings.

If you are looking at the filter through the fairings behind the front tire, then you can connect this ratchet to the cap wrench at the 2 o clock position and rotate it to the 4 o clock position which is a good 60 degrees.

yep, i changed mine this spring without taking any fairings off. And it was super easy. Anyone who takes their fairings off is just making extra work for themselves.

Yeah you can do it, but when you take the filter off oil drips down into the belly pan of the fairings and is a pain to clean up good.

not too bad, just soak it up with shop towels, and wipe out the rest. its a minimal amount anyways.

A little oil dripped into the belly pan of the fairings and when I cleaned it up I found the source of my intermittent ticking noise at all RPM's - a few small pebbles!
And all this while I was thinking it was my valve clearances.

I use the aluminum foil method. Fold a piece of aluminum foil so it forms a trough and wedge it underneath the filter. Take the filter off and the oil drips onto the trough, and runs down into my oil container. No mess for a quick 30-second prep job. ;0)

I didn't know people actually thought you had to take the fairings off to do the F4i oil change. I've done 16 oil changes to mine by now without ever removing fairings or using any tools other then a socket for the oil pan bolt.
