new noise, is this a problem???
ok, so i am totally new to both this forum thing and the bike world. Recently bought an '01 CBR 600 F4i. (first bike) I'll get some pics up soon. It has 14,000 mi on the bike, but only 1000 on the engine. they guy i bought it from is a stunt rider and sponsored by Honda. he used to ride with a local crew here, and it seems like he was a cool guy. He's having a kid so he had to sell the bike. Still has his stunt bike, this was going to be his street bike. Anyway, he said he totally rebuilt the bike, and everthing looked/sounded ok. Some parts were upgraded as well. After a couple days, there is a light "rattling" noise. sounds like it is toward the front of the engine, and it only does it on acceleration at around 4-6k RPM... It isnt a loud noise, and it doesnt do it if you rev the throttle in neutral. Only when riding. Not sure if im being paranoid or what. lol Almost sounds like a loose cooling fan or something... Are there any problems the CBR has that sound like this? Thanks for your input!! Im also trying to find some guys in the area to start riding with, i need some more experienced people to learn with and push myself. im in Roseville, CA if anyone is around. Thanks!

RE: new noise, is this a problem???
Ok, so how bad of a problem is this? Im pretty mechanically proficient if i have some idea of what im doing. Should i stop riding the bike, or is this something i just need to get fixed some time soon? will this cause any permanent damage? Where do i find some info on how to get to the CCT and how i would either replace/adjust it? how much $$ am i lookin at here? thanks for all the help!!

It seems the fix is to install a manual cam chain tensioner -- all Honda's attempts at upgrading seem to last about 3 months[:-] Do it yourself for around $50. Ape Manual Tensioner

Have a mechanic type listen to it and verify it's the CCT. If so then don't ride it until you have it repaired. There was a link on this forum with a step by step on replacing it -- try doing a search. It's not a difficult procedure if you know how to wrench -- just a lot tighter space to work with on a bike.
Now beware that bikes in the best of mechanical condition make noises. These are 600 and 1000 cc motors tuned to deliver 100-160hp stock. They're gonna make some mechanical noise. You don't have a lined hood or sound proof cabin so you're gonna hear noise. The trick is knowing your bikes normal sounds at a particular RPM.

First things first. The bike has been torn apart, as in an engine exchange. Or who knows what else. Go through everything and make sure they didn't forget to tighten something down. At that rpm, the engine is vibrating anything that is loose. Could be a lot of things, Honda didn't skimp on the doo-dads. Take all the fairings off and hit everything.

he brought it by the shop, it does sound like the CCT but it is minor..so it will not be a problem for now..I told him to make sure it soes not already have one (manual CCT) by visably looking in there after removing the fairing..if it has one it just needs adjusting, if the guy rebuilt everything it may have already been changed
