I like having mirrors on for same reason as stated above. To be able to see around you at all times. When changing lanes and such I always should check anyways but I like to know whats going on around me at all times so that I know which lanes are open for me to escape into when some cellphone distracted cager desides my bike does not deserve its own lane.

If you really want a good field of vision behind you, a set of the bar end mirrors that are around $16 on ebay work good and keep the bike legal if you use block offs in place of the stock mirrors. I guess you could use both if you wanted to. Just remember that they are convex mirrors and things are closer than they appear. Always headcheck no matter what.

Yea, head turn is always best, but mirrors are great to check tail gaters. Depending on your body position and arms, I like to adjust my mirrors so that I can see right under my armpits clearly when I'm upright and still able to see behind when tucked. I'm pretty sure having aftermarket clipons has something to do with my arm position that allows for that.

I was able to find a placement for my mirrors that works well. The other suggestions helped as well (tucking the arms and using convex mirrors). Thanks for the feedback.

I use mirror extenders on my bike and don't have a problem now seeing behind me.

Probably one of the worse mirrors i have ever used.. You can see just the outside lane if your on the 4 lane, nothing behind you.
