manual cam chain tensioner

manual cam chain tensioner
I'm replacing my stock cam chain tensioner with a manual one on my F4I. While I'm under the tank I'm going to check my valve clearance. Can I adjust my tensioner, and then do my valves? The reason I ask is because the manual says to back off on the tensioner with the special tool before checking the valves. I just don't see how tension on the camshaft chain will make any difference when I check my valves. I want to just want to adjust my manual tensioner with the proper tension on the chain, adjust my valves and be done with it. CAN I DO THIS?

RE: manual cam chain tensioner
I'm replacing the chain tensioner on my wifes F4i also. I hope it will eliminate some of the vibration. If the manual says back off the cam chain tensioner then I would back off of it. Just curious, How many miles is on your bike? The valves shouldn't need adjusted until about 20,000 miles.

RE: manual cam chain tensioner
actually it is supposed to be checked at 16000, and again at like 30000 according to my manual, and I wasn't aware you had to remove the valve cover to change the tensioner, just use the tool to back the auto one out and put the new one in and adjust it. There are how toos floating around on that subject around these forums somewhere.
