Irratic Shifting... WTF 05 CBR
My bike has 1134miles the shifting has always felt a little notchy, untill after my 1000mile oil change, all of a sudden after the second oil change it started shifting smooth as butter. For about 2 hours. I always thought that the shifting roughness was my inexperience after a long hiatus with motorcycles. But the more comfortable I get on this bike the more I am thinking it's not me. Another theory is I am shifting way before the shift points because when I shift at high RPM's the bike shifts smoother....... Any ideas, feel free to tell me I am a ****ty driver if that is what it boils down to.

My '01 shifts like **** too, but it has 11000 miles. I miss a shift every time I ride it, usually while riding slowly through traffic, at high rpms it shifts OK. It also wont go into gear when rolling to a stop while its cold and I have found a false neutral between 5 and 6 on numerous occasions. You really just cant be lazy with it, which kind of sucks because sometimes I like to ride slow. Be deliberate with your shifts and put a lot of muscle behind them.

I can also confirm shifting inconsistencies. I notice it when I've been cruising for a while in 5 and try to shift into 6. Sometimes it just misses the gear, or doesn't shift fully into 6 leaving me with no power and a dis-heartening grinding noise. The remedy is to pull the clutch and try again, but when I try to shift up to 6 again I can't because there aren't any gears left. It's already in 6. Very weird and annoying.
BTW, I ride a 2004 with 2600 mi. I first noticed it at around 2000 mi but first thought I was getting lazy. If I take my time and shift in a very deliberate way I can avoid it.

I have the exact same problem as all of you I just bought my bike this year and I have 5000 on it but out of the blue it will do this as well, I have been wanting to take it into the dealer and see if they can do something about it since I purchased the extended warranty on the thing. I have also try'd to adjust the shift cable seems to work for a bit but goes back to the bouncing of 5 and 6 gear.

i personally think that your bikes are ok. if you're clutch lever is in tolerance with the book, like .5 in. free play, etc. then you should be good.
also check to make sure that the shift rod makes as close to 90 degree angle with the connector at the engine side. this will give you maximum torque to shift.

As long as there is a "half of inch" of pull in the lever that is enough to disengage that clutch. Any more pulling is just a waste and will not change anything. Sounds normal to me. Believe me the answer to all the shifting and transmission questions on this sight is not because the lever is not adjusted right.

Same sad story here. I think I've had it happen three or four times in the 5,000 or so miles I've put on my CBR. Every time, it's been an issue when I shifted from fifth to sixth gear. It's almost as if I tried to shift a manual trans. car from fourth into fifth, and the gyros kick the stick back into neutral. There is a grinding sound, but I've pulled my clutch lever in case the trans. shifts in a direction I didn't want it to shift to. The problem is not easily reproduceable and I doubt the dealership/service technician can fix something that's not easily replicated.

I agree with you Mike. I can't replicate the problem on demand, it's too sporatic. I thought about taking it in and cashing in the benefits of my 5 yr warranty, but I doubt I can demonstrate or explain it well enough. That is unless one of the mechanics wants to ride on the back of my bike at 70 mph.
I just try to be a little more deliberate about going into 6 now, make sure I let the gas off completely as I'm shifting.
