Two things jump out right away 1) were you in gear with the kickstand down. 2) do you shut your bike off using the kill switch on the right grip. I've done number one on more occasions than I want two admit. If two then you may have worn out rocker switch.

the light harness under your front fairing connects everything to the fuel pump...if that came loose, nothing will work

dont worry, ive done 1 a few too many times as well...lol...it really got me confused the first time it happened. on my way bak from the dealer before i read the manual.

and will using the killswitch really wear it out in as little as four years? whenever i shut my bike off, i shut it off completely. the MSF course taught me to use the killswitch and the ignition everytime, so it has become habit...is it a bad thing?

Kickstand switch or wire may be bad, maybe fuel pump failed. Kickstand wire happenned to a buddies yamaha, I think when he was riding. good luck and try and post what it finally was.
