Help! Is my tranny done?
I was just riding and shifting from 4 to 5 or 5 to 6 and when I let out the clutch and gave it some gas it missed the gear and felt like I was in neutral and I heard noises which sounded like I ran over some rocks or gravel. Does anyone know what's going on? Is my tranny done? Is this a freak thing?
Sounds like you didn't fully engage when you shifted and it tried to pop back out and grinded instead. Drain your oil first, if you have chunks of metal in it you've got a problem.
Make sure when you go to engage it into gear when it slips in neutral that you bring the rev's up to meet the speed of the bike, or you can do alot of damage(probably the sound like it was grenading inside that you heard)
I've had the same thing happen to me twice since I've owned my bike. (The last 1200 miles)...After casually upshifting I let out of the clutch. I could hear the gears/syncros grinding my guess trying to line in place. I worried about it at first, my guess is that it's no big deal. My guess is that not pressing up real hard doesn't fully mesh the gears, when yourelease the clutch the input shaft/engine (probably) trys meshing with the intermediate/output shaft. Since the gears aren't fully meshed it grinds until the gears catch.....If I'm wrong someone let me know..
600f4i: I think that only applies to clutchless shifting... You don't jam the trans into gear while the input shaft is spinning at engine speed... If you have the clutch pulled in, the syncrosSHOULD mesh the gears without a problem.

CBRrider: I know that it should mesh in with no problems, but if you've had this happen it's not always the case. I've had it happen a few times and I CANNOT hit it in hard enough to mesh, once I bring up the speed of the input shaft to match it seems to go in a lot easier.
my bike started shifting like crap one day (couple false nuetrals and kept hittin real nuetral goin from first to second). got home and took a look at the shift linkage and the adjuster rod jam nuts had loosened to finger tight. i blue locktited the threads and tightened them back up and now my tranny is snick, snick smooth
When Iget a false neutral, here's what I do:
1) Remind myself to not panic
2) Swear
3) Look at dash panel for "N" light to verify that it's not clutch slip
4) See step 2
If I can safely stop, I choose to. If not:
a) Quick Rev engine and let it settle
b) Clutchless upshift into 2nd (don't know RPM)
c) Evaluate results, swearing optional.

My bike does the same thing as your bike did ninetyfivehp, slipping into neutral when shifting up into second... I'm gonna take apart the tranny over winter, i'm hoping it's a few loose nuts and not a bent shift fork or something ridiculous...
