Default tranny

has anyone done any tranny work my fith gear has problems and i cant say what it is but it just wont go into the gear if i try to go in it just jams up i dont know exactly how to approch this i have the repair manual but i dont want to screw it up worse than it already is wheni pull it all apart to try to fix it i know how to seperate the engine i just dont know where to look to start to diagnose this problem i already checked the oil level and it still has problems.

any help would be apprecaited

could be any of the following:

bent shift fork
bent shift spindle
bent shift claw
sticking shift drum stopper

how hard is allthat to take care of and to tell should i just tear it all down and look or what?

you will have no choice but to pull the engine anyway. pop the oil pan and look inside. my money is on the shift dogs or at the least the shift dog for 5th. look in your repair manual and see how to get to the shift dogs or see what you have to remove to make them more visible. there are 3, look in the manual for the one that gets used for 5th. i don't remember it being hard to remove. check to see if it is bent or within service limits. when the engine is out, get a pipe and attach the clutch lever to it and work the clutch while you are looking into the tranny and shift by hand until you get to fifth to see what might be holding it up. that may give you a better idea before going any further.
