Thanks for the responses... the bike is running much better than the day I made the original post, though it def. needs work. Right now... 20 mpg, running on 3 cylinders, gas smell, need to give a little throttle to start bike. FI light is gone.

Here is the plan: i'm going to take the bike home from the shop, check the oil and plugs, and buy a fpr and map sensor from someone who is parting out his f4i. It doesn't look like they are that complicated to install, are they?

Have them put the MAP in . If they are wrong then then they should re-diag the problem for what you have paid for . If they are right then you may have found a shop you can trust .

A bad MAP sensor can cause the problem you describe . Was it running a little rough ? Smell raw fuel out the exhaust ? Lack of power on accel ? Bad mileage ?
MAP = Manifild Absolute Pressure , or engine vacuum . It tells the PCM what load the engine is under . If its bad it may be telling the PCM that you are close to wide open or have a 300 lb chick on the rear seat , if so it will pour the fuel to it . Got a multi meter ? Probe the signal return wire off the map with the engine running and rev it up . If voltage only changes .5 to 1.0 v ,or not at all ,its not working correctly .

A bad fuel PSI reg will cause simuliar problems . But normally does not kick a FI light . A vacuum contrlled reg( a bad one) will suck fuel into the vacuume supply area (intake manifold) and smell rich at the exhaust , run rough .

A springcontrolled (internally) can only leak fuel outside thehousing. fuel has nowhere else to go .

Injector on-off time will still control the amount of fuel going to the cylinders, to a point , if the regulator is bad .

Hope this helps... good luck.

fouled spark plug?

fouled spark plugs will make those symptoms.
bad idle, running rich, smelling like gas (unburnt fuel in cylinders

ok, i feel stupid now. i am trying to replace the pressure regulator. right now i have the tank propped open with everything still hooked up. I took the top bolt out of the regulator without incident. When I loosened the bottom one, of course gas started flowing out. (i put the bolt back in) How do I shut off the flow of gas from the tank through the regulator! Is there a valve that will cut off the fuel?

I don't remember exactly, but isn't there a hose you could pull off the regulator and plug (golf tees work well)? When I had to replace mine I spilled gas everywhere. If the gas is coming out of the fuel pipe then it should stop after that gas is spilled out. I would recommend having lots of towels handy, try to plug or pinch the source of the spilling fuel, and if you can't stop it just be ready to hook up the new regulator really quick.

i dont know, i think it might be your spark plugs. its you smelling gas and you see the liquid drop flying out of your muffler it might be the spark plugs. bad plugs will give you horrible start up and will kill your mpg.
good luck. also, check if your intake or return fuel line is leaking.

Did you get the return fuel regulator switched yet? You should definitely change plugs after you do the regulator.

Swapped out the regulator and the bike is running perfectly now... amazing how such a small fix can make such a big difference! Going to change the oil and the plugs too to be on the safe side.

Can you post the directions on how to change the FPR for f4i?
