I have had those flames also, I only get it when its really cold out. What happens is that there is too much fuel going throughthe engine, the hot fuel is leaving the engine as a vapor which when it is combined with the cold air creates the backfire on your exhaust. Since our bikes are fuel injected there isn't much for adjusting the fuel/air mixture.
