Default Gauge Cluster LED Swap Question

For anyone who's changed over their gauge cluster to another color, did you change the associated resistors on each LED or not? I would think if you did not, you would not get the rated brightness, especially out of a blue or white LED. I say this because a typical amber LED (OEM) has a voltage drop of 1.5-2V and most blue and white LED's have a drop of about 3.5V. Without changing out the resistor also, the blue or white LED would not be as bright.

I've got my LED's on order to do the swap, just want to know if I have to get some resistors to swap out also

I don't have them yet, but here is what I ordered. There are 2 sets of blue LED's because I wasn't sure which ones I wanted (90 mcd or 140mcd) so I got both You only need one set of the blue LED's. Mine is going to be setup with a blue LCD face, then the tach is gonna go from white to blue to green to yellow to red. The temp indicator will be green.

Bump for the original question!

I hope you're good at desoldering circuit boards, because all the LEDs for the LCDs are UNDER them, and there are a LOT of pins attaching them to the boards.

I sent mine off, so I couldn't tell you if he switched any resistors or not.

Yea, I'm pretty good at that. I actually have the board all taken apart already, just waiting for the LED's to get here so I can solder them on. I have a pretty good stock of resistors also if I have to replace them. Unfortunately, it seems nobody has looked at that before I have good test equipment I can use to figure the problem out, just can't get the bike in there for the harness If all I need was the battery, ignition, and ground wires connected I could do it that way, but I don't know what all is required to get the board to light up.

There should be no need for resistors, my buddy did mine w/ LED's the he had from when he used to do swaps on cars. Most surface mount LED's run about the same voltage.

I know for a fact that the blue and white LED's run about double the voltage as the stock orange LED's. The stock LED's are about 1.8V (tested with multimeter). The datasheet for the blue and white LED's all show about 3.5V. I know it is not NECESSARY to change out the existing resistors on the board, but if it makes the blue and white led's run at half brightness, I'm going to change them out to run at the correct current soI get the rated brightness.

If my LED's arrive today or tomorrow I'll just test it out for myself and post the results for all you guys.
