It's probably easily fixable if you've got a Dremel or a bench grinder, or heck, even a flat file would probably work, but it ruins the coloring and I suppose could weaken the lever. Guys I knew just didn't want to deal with fixes and were worried about how they would end standing up to normal wear and tear.

 

They do. I just had them put on my bike. But also ran into this problem, but bleed out the brakes and they work just fine.
