Default F4i 03 Air Filter

Hi,

How do you know if you need a new air filter if I don’t want to take anything out/apart on an F4i 03? If I do need to change how much is a middle of the road one? Thanks

Do you know when/if the previous owner replaced it? Recommended interval is 12,000 miles. I'm lazy and do mine every two years/20,000 miles, same as for coolant and brake fluid.

I got the Bike Master air filter for $30 shipped from Amazon. I saw an increase in fuel efficiency of almost 10%, so I think the old one was a little dirty.

If you use a high-flow one like a K&N, you will probably want to think about a Power Commander to adjust the fuel injection map.

If you are under 30k miles and not riding through dust storms all the time it should be fine. If you replace it go with the OEM one, I replaced mine at around 16k miles and it wasn't at all dirty.

Your best bet is to inspect it before you buy one. I bought a brand new one and when I looked at my current one it was a K&N that just needed a light cleaning :\

Edit: its easy to check them, just lift the tank up and undo all the screws on the airbox. Remember there is a screw right in the middle of the box!
