Default engine temp sensor

well, ive been putting my bike back together since i crashed it. i got pretty much everything back on it except for fairings, i cranked it up today and let it run for a while just to make sure the engine was running fine, and i noticed that the temp got up to around 190 and the fan never kicked on... is this normal? what temp should that thing kick on at? i tested the fan, and it works. my guess is a bad temp sensor, where could i buy one of those from online?

Yes that is normal. The fan doesn't kick on until 220-230F on these bikes. If you let it idle long enough to get up to around that temperature, I'm willing to bet it will switch on like it should.

yeah mine comes on around 228-231 and the highest i have seen is 233 i read on another thread(bout a week ago) about replacing the switch with a 87 nissan pulsar switch and then it will come on around 220 and i think you can get a switch that you can turn on and off but will still come on at certain temps im not really too sure i havent messed with mine yet but i will change it somehow

Here is the write-up on changing out the switch:

I just got back from my test ride after installing mine and it came on at 205, vs. 228 with the stock switch.

My 01 fan comes on at 220..The highest I have seen was 229 but it was a 115 out and I had been riding for a while and sitting...now I know even 229 is not going to harm anything, but I think 205 for the fan is a bit more ideal..220 seems just Eh...Axsys do you notice that the fan is running quite often now? I assume it is going off almost every time you hit a light! Once I break 200 and up, even if Im cruising, when coming to a stoplight she will creep up to 200-220 real quick. What is your max temp now with the 205 vs your past max?

I literally only rode long enough to see that the fan came on at 205, I headed straight home after that. I will let you know when I get some more time with the new switch.
