I do it with my fairings on no problem. I just let the oil from the filter drip on whatever and they use a little brake cleaner to spray it all off. Works great.

Looks like BD has not posted since late last year

Well I bit the bullet and went to my Honda dealer and got the stuff (err the dealer raped me that is)...31 dollars later....4.50 a quart of oil and 12 bucks for the filter??[&:] Since this is the first time I changed the oil on my bike I figured I'd just get the OEM stuff this time around...will probably use a Purolater 14610 filter next time and Valvoline MC oil when it is on sale at Auto Zone (1.99 a qt)

In any event it is pretty simple to DIY without taking the fairings off...just use an extension and a filter cap wrench and bingo...no probs at all...just put some tinfoil on the headers under the filter to keep the majority of the dripping oil off of them. Still got a little bit on but it cooked off after a few miles..nothing major...found out that where the 2 front fairings meet, it is a great place for tons of little rocks and pebbles to gather. I didn't tourqe either the oil filter or the drain bolt as my wrench is set for 1/2 inch not 3/8. I just tightened them like I do on my car and took it for a nice spin. No leaks so good to go.

All in all pretty east to do..I put in 3.5 qts exactly...hard to tell what level the oil is at when doing it by yourself and no stand...gotta balance the bike and hope you don't drop it...I think I am right at the top line....last oil change was done a year ago April by previous owner....good thing I decide to change it...it looked like brown swill coming out! Not dark or dirty like a car oil but a scummy brown [sm=smiley11.gif]

Ick...no wonder it was running sort of rough...

wow, i can't believe some of these posts...

car oil? wtf?

to keep the oil from going everywhere from removing the oil filter I:

1) Cover the headers with aluminum foil, creating a channel for the oil to drain to
2) unscrew the filter very very slowly so it doesn't all dump out at once

only oil I'll use is: Honda HP4 WITHOUT MOLY

Sure it's more expensive but it was made for the bike and it's what it says in the owners manual. I always follow the manual (except for that 'every 16,000 miles'valve adjusting junk)

i think some common sense should jump in here... "car oil" is for... cars, it says so in the name. Bike oil has to do the job of engine oil and transmission oil.

if you use moly once or twice, it won't kill your bike really. it just increases problems you could have with your clutch more than anything. it also makes the bike harder to shift in some cases.
