Default crunching gears

i did a inexperienced move being an experienced rider. im so angry with myself! '02 f4i just bought.
i just woke up and realized it was raining. being that my baby was uncovered i rushed out to put a cover on. half asleep, i was wiping it down and started it up to make sure it starts and dry any wet plugs. so when i saw that digits showing zero in the temp gauge and it was idling high, (like when the choke is on with a carbd engine) i thought something was wrong with the gauge, so i grabbed the clutched and shifted to 2nd, oops, half asleep, 1st gear and the gears shaked and crunched really loud, i couldnt put it completely in gear. i dont know why i would so that, except that i was panicked and just woken up thinking i wasnt in idle already. uno how the bike is in gear, and it needs to be shifted to N while ur standing by its side? anyhow, did i damage the gears? it only happened for a second. good thing i was holdingthe clutch! i am used to carbs and chokes so its as if i kicked it into 1st to ride when the choke is on and its revving high. also are the digits suppose to display zero for a while before it registers 97degress 98 degrees, etc. thanks!

ok, in other less rambling on words: i tried shifting to 1st when the bike was still cold and idling high so the gears did that vibrating and crunching sound (ive heard before on carbed bikes if u try shifting in first while the choke is idling high).
did i screw up my gears?

Probably not.

When the bike is sittins still with the clutch in it is difficult for the gears to mesh.

Just go back out when its not raining, start the bike and put it in neutral. If it wont go in right away, then you may have to slip the clutch just a little while holding the brake (make sure you are sitting on the bike).

I believe my temp gauge registers a -- until 97 degrees.

I'd guess at high idle the tranny can take the hit, the motor probably isn't making 10lb of torque, keep us posted and good luck.

At high idle you will stall the motor long before you hurt the tranny. The shift forks are usually the first to take damage from abuse. Our transmissions are racing pieces with straight cut gears and dog engangement no synchros. Not easy to damage.

thanks to all replies. i took the bike out now thats its sunny and dry and it shifts normal so far and i could find neutral easy. im just learning the f4i and fuel injection and i love it. i know they're honda's and can take abuse but hate doing dumb moves like that when i know better. I guess it was as if i was shifting to 1st while warming up at high idle to ride but didnt push down enough pressure so i got that kick back, not in gear, grinding sound.

If it pops out of gear, or is hard to shift into gear.
