Why is the tip "pinned" to the shaft? Is it perhaps a hardened tip to prevent wear? If it is hardened touching it with a welder may soften it up.

One way to find out is to take a swipe at it with a file. If one pass leaves a groove on the tip then you've nothing to worry about as far as hardness but if the file skates across without leaving a mark then it may be a problem

I just picked up a 01 F4i (wrecked salvage - runs but can't ride yet) and too have noticed the CCT noise. Haven't a chance to pull out the stock unit to see if it has a hardened tip but if you have an OEM one lying around Blackdog and a file in hand would you mind checking the tip and letting me know. My father owns a wedling/machine shop and I'd be glad to tack one together and update everyone if it's sucessful.

Thanx

in that case i would think it's 'hardened'...because after touching the cam chain forevers, the thing is still smooth and no scratches on it really...

ok...ix ne the welding, back to the pin flaring...maybe that's why uncle jeff, proprietor of the pin flare, didn't weld it.

Is the shaft hollow with the spring recessed or is the shaft solid?

i believe the shaft is not hollowed. the spring sits at the base of the shaft.

Can't tell until I take an up close look at it but I can't see why the spring pin couldn't be knocked out, drill out the holes in the shaft and spot weld the hardened tip back in. Using small spot welds will definately decrease the chance of removing the temper out of the tip. To be safe I'd quench the tip in water after each spot weld.

If I get time this week I'll remove my CCT and give it a shot...

Just some potential useful information/input/feedback regarding my replacement J23/2 blue dotted tensioner. I installed it on my 2002 F4i 2400 miles ago and currently have no noises. I by no means am saying that the rattle is gone forever but it has been good up to this point....

i think most of the cctl's up to f4i's have had some issues, but not as loud as the f4i's.

i have 2 blue dots on there now...and i've done the mod...but i still have some rattling coming from elsewhere, which i know is not the cctl, but does sound like it. it's a bike, it's going to make lots of noises you know?
