Before I describe my problem, I did use the search function and did find some helpful info. But I still have some things I'm unsure of.

The Problem:

I just purchased a 2003 F4i with 5300 miles that is completely stock. The lady won the bike in her divorce so I got it pretty cheap. I knew it didn't run well when I bought it. I thought it would be an easy fix as she said her ex didn't winterize it. When I took it apart, the 1st and 2nd spark plugs were completely fouled out and there was also standing fuel in the cylinder. My conclusion was bad gas, plugs, and two injectors that were stuck open from lack of maintenance.

I purchased a throttle body unit and new plugs (stock NGK iridium) on Ebay and replaced the plugs and injectors. I also drained the old gas and put in new. Started the bike fine, idles just over 2K RPM when cold, but as the temperature increases, the RPM get gradually lower and lower until the bike shuts off. It will run if you hold on the throttle.

I then replaced the pressure regulator from the other throttle body. Still no luck.

My question is this: the throttle body I purchased is from a 2006 f4i and looks the same with 2 exceptions; my throttle body does not have the idle adjustment screw and my TB has more vacuum lines going into it than the 06 TB. Could this just be an emissions thing? (My bike has the California stamp on the VIN sticker)

Any ideas/thoughts are greatly appreciated and thanks in advance!

 

swap 2 injectors out of the other set into yours. Otherwise you have to convert/block all the emissions junk. Your issue is either lack of the idle adjuster or the fact you dont have all the vac lines hooked up on the non-cali TB.

 

this used to happen to my bike. when the bike reached 220 degrees or so, it would just die. it turned out that the thermostat was bad and it was shorting out the bike when it was supposed to be circulating the coolant to the radiator. so if all else fails, keep that in mind.

 

I swapped out all of the injectors and put on the idle adjustment screw. Now the bike runs and doesn't die. When the bike gets above 220, the RPM begins to drop as it did before and has a bit of hesitation when you open the throttle.

Rennen, with your thermostat issue, did the bike just suddenly die, or did it start to lag and slowly drop idle speed?

 

Is your fan kicking on? The bike doesnt really like to run above 220, i personally like to see it between 175-190. Check your fan fuses aswell as the fan. it is common for the fan to slowly go bad. What this does for your electrical system is put more load on it. sometimes blowing the fuse but until it does it is drawing power away from the other components, such as fuel pump and ignition system.

220 degrees fahrenheit = 104 degrees celsius
