Check your charging voltage. Its probably not charging. Put a voltmeter on the battery and take a reading at 3-5k rpms. Should see 13.5 to 14.5v. If its not charging, look at the r/r, burned r/r plug, and stator.

get or download a shop manual. it will be most helpful as you learn about the bike

+1 My bike was doing the same thing and I changed the Rectifier for like $50 off ebay and it works like a charm.

Most likely a charging system prob. When the battery is good, the R/R is usually suspect. While the stator, as part of the system can go bad, it typically takes some type of heavy impact to abruptly affect stator performance.

As recommended, do your trouble-shooting to determine. Verify if your battery is good. If your R/R is the problem, you can replace your R/R on your own...its plug-n-play. No need to pay a shop $85-95/shop hr to do this.

Good luck.

the test is that simple? just put a voltmeter on the battery while revving? For some reason I remember reading pages from the manual of how to do the stator test and it was damn complicated

that is just the first test to test the system, to see if its working. there is a separate test for the stator, but its fairly simple.

to test the stator, your looking for:
1. a good circuit through the winding
2. no winding shorted to ground

test 1, continuity (ohm) between the stator pins.
test 2, no continuity between each pin and ground.

the stator (winding) and rotor (metal drum spinning around it) creates ac current. the regulator converts it to dc volts so the bike can use it. the reg generates heat during the process, that is really hard on electrical parts, and usually dies because of it and can fry the connectors.

simple!

it is important to test the stator, at least to make sure its good. a bad stator will fry a brand new regulator very quickly.
