Alternative tools to adjust rear shock?

Can't find my spanner and I want to experiment with the preload a bit. So what have yall used when the C spanner isn't about?

I've been looking for something to adjust it as well. Some have recommended Channel Lock Pliers, the problem is that they are to big to turn the dial under the spring. maybe you'd have better luck with a smaller pair?
