Aftermarket Air Filter

RE: Aftermarket Air Filter
I just replaced mine with stock...can't go wrong there. Plus you don't have to worry about it leaning out. I've heard from several guys who have both slip ons and aftermarket filters that it made it run lean. I already have a slip on so just figured i'd play it safe and go stock. I don't know about how much they are over there, but the K&N was about $20 more over here. (Something like ~$45 vs $65 or so.)

RE: Aftermarket Air Filter
based on the prices ive found..
34.00 stock filter
59.00 for a BMC street filter
45.00 for k&n filter.
Ive read many of these forums many state the bike leans out after mods..That maybe true. But how many that have added mods ACTUALLY had their a/f checked to see if they really were lean or rich?
Ever maker builds in a safety net in the fuel/ignition system..Unless its creating a drivability issue ,i say dont worry about rich/lean..

Never said the k&n car filter cleaned better.I said it was about FLOW..The K&n has shown on some bikes to cause a problem with power(lower) and to mess with the a/f .
As far as forced induction cars.I know more than most will ever know about them..Hence i have a 281cc car making over 600rwhp on pump gas..
My point was a k&n doesnt flow as well because it has LESS surface area than the stock filter and BMC filter..Less surafce area means less flow PERIOD.
Here is a picture of all three side by side in this order K&N --- stock-- bmc
Tell me which one you would want in your bike?

that makes absolutely no sense and is nothing but internet heresay. Both bike and car K&N filters are made the same way using the same materials. Claiming that K&N on a car cleans the air better then K&N on a bike cleaning the very same air is just silly. That's not even considering the air velocity is much greater with car engines, specially forced induction engines.

RE: Aftermarket Air Filter
Dwhite... I agree.
When your bike was crated up, loaded in a container and shipped to the USA, it could have gone to a dealer in Miami or Denver. The bike was expected to perform well at either altitude and humidity level. A clean filter vs a sorta dirty one isn't going to change the air/fuel ratio any more than riding in one of these locals vs the other.
I think the main concern here should be how effectively the impurities are caught by the filter and kept out of the combustion chamber where they can cause damage. OE is good. BMC is good. K&N's tend to not have a great seal in the box, but the element is good. You can clean and reuse K&N and BMC.
BMC wins only on the basis of being reusable and providing a better lip seal in the box.
