When you see the gas gauge, its time to stop and get gas. I know its supposed to show reserve but I had mine come on once and I ended up running out of gas before any of the lights ever started blinking.

Mine was blinking halfway on the reserve bar meter thing and I filled it up with only 3.5g....When my F4 light came on it was like 4.1-4.3g I'd put in.

There is a real cool explanation of how the fuel meter works in the factory service manual you can download. It calculates off a switch in the tank aswell as engine rpm and speed, and the kickstand switch also plays a roll.
