First of hi!
Next thing, I'm working on an 04 and when it goes to reserve it sputters and when you shut it off it will not start like the battery is dead. Any ideas?

 

the starter should turn regardless of the amount of gas in the tank. I would start by checking the electrical first like make sure the battery is still good. You can test this by attempting to jump start the bike with a car.

 

Ok maybe a little more info. It turns on and off just fine and then when the gas light/reserve comes on and we shut it off it's like the battery is dead. Only happens when the gas is low

 

your reserve may be incorrect.

like dead battery?.... does it have battery voltage? if so, how much? does it crank? how do you get it started? if you jump it, make sure the car is not running.

+1 to Demon's comments.

If it cranks over, just won't start when you switch to reserve,
check-out the petcock filter. Reserve draws from the bottom of the tank,
it may be clogged. This only applies if you have a 2-stage petcock (main/reserve).
If you have just an indicator light and don't have to manualy switch, it doesn't.
