Default Play in front sprocket?

Should the front sprocket have any side to side play at all when its bolt is tightened fully? Or should it be absolutely stiff aside from being able to spin? Thanks in advance

Nope. Should be tight. Probably a bad bearing.

I can have a couple thousandths axially (in and out) but it shouldn't have any play rotationally.

This is what I meant. I guess I just jumped to the problem where my kawa had a front sprocket that wiggled back and forth. Thats what I thought he meant by side to side. Apparently there is a bearing in those that goes bad that causes this back and forth (lateral) wiggle.

There is a little play in wiggle room. I thought it was weird too a couple years ago. Many assured me nothing can go wrong on this forum. 3 years later, not a problem yet. I always suggest using "Locktite" on every bolt, especially if you remove this one.

Yeah, all of my bikes have some play. I also thought the same thing when I first did a chain/sprocket job.
