Default Need help trany noise

First off my bike has 53000 miles on it and it is a 94. i got it with 39000 miles on it and first gear has always been noisy. just recently i notices that 2nd and third gear are starting to make the noise to but much more subtle and right at about 4k rpm. My other problem, which may or may not be related, is that it sounds like my chain is chattering like an old unevenly stretches one does. I replaced the sprockets and chain and i still have the same prob. Could that be related to the nonsense that is going on inside my trany? If any of you have ever overhauled or replaced one of these I would be interested in any advice. I do my own work but i have never been in there so i don't know what to expect. thanks!

james.

Oh! I forgot to mention that the sound it makes is that of a car in reverse that winds up with the revs.

Check your oil for "sparkles". How old are your clutch and springs? Does the noise go away with the clutch in?

I'm pretty sure the clutch needs replaced is slips but only under serious power. I changed the oil recently and didn't see anything odd in the oil. what do i need to order to do the clutch? I don't want to get in there and realize i am missing something.
thanks
james.

If the clutch is slipping, the springs, fiber plates, and maybe the steel plates need replacing.

The clutch basket can also be notched by the plates moving around. You check the ears that hold the plates in place. Can drag and affect gear selection.

Gear whine, may also be the shift forks being worn and not moving the gears totally into place. Bigger repair.

there isn't much slipping going on and gear selection is good and precise. I think this is going to be a bigger fix. I'm down to do whatever. I just need to figure out what it is and is it worth it
