Default Lowered needle clip still lean

I cleaned my carbs, put 140 mains in it, and put the dynojet needle clips on the 4th position from the top (they were at the second before). Past 8k rpm it pulls real hard but sputters up to 8k and makes the lean popping noises as it winds down under 8k. At 1/4-1/2 or so throttle it pulls ok under 8k but when I give it full it sputters, the same way it did above 8k before I put the 140s in. It just doesnt seem logical, i went down 2 clip positions and it still seems just as lean. Any advice would be appreciated

Sounds like your pilot jets are not adjusted correctly. The clips on your needle work in reverse. Closer to the top of the needle is leaner as the needle reaches further into the jet.
Check your pilot jet setting. Starting pilot setting for Dynojet is 1 1/2 turns out. Depending on your exhaust setup, you may have to go out to 2 full turns or more. Make adjustments in 1/4 turn increments. Mine are at 1 3/4 turns with 138 mains on a Yosh slip on can.
