You can get away with 1-2 links under sized and maybe more over.

The problem is if you like to corner or track hard. too short and you increase flicking speed but loose stability. Too long of a chain and vice versa, harder to flick the bike over but increased stability.

You always want to be on the shorter side of things, to accommodate for chain "stretch".
