Default Bought a project

I recently bought a '92 600F2 with some problems and need some input from actual owners. I've rode a 2008 GSXR 600 and wonder what to expect from a bike 21 yrs old. The previous owner, someone I believe, says it's still strong. They just put bigger injectors on it and he took it for a test. Said it ran great to the end of the road, about 1 mile, but half way back it died. His wife wanted in gone anyway so I got a great deal on it so now I need it running. I took the gas tank off and opened the petcock valve. My question is, shouldn't fuel come out when you open the valve? No matter where I turn the **** no fuel comes out. I don't want to get a $150 part and it not be the problem but will be happy to if it will fix the problem.

First of all F2's dont have injectors, I would assume you mean jets in the carbs. And no fuel should not come out the petcock, unless the little hose that runs from the petcock to the engine is sucked on by you or the bike while its running. There are two hoses connected to the petcock, the big one is for fuel and the little one is vacuum.

As for the running great for a few minutes, then dying, the one very simple thing it could be is a kinked or block vent hose at the bottom of the tank.

There are two hoses connected to the bottom of the tank, the larger one is the overflow hose, which routes fuel to the ground in the event that you over-fill the tank - you can see the hole which leads to this hose with the gas cap up.
The smaller hose, which also just leads to the ground, is the tank vent line - if this is kinked or blocked in some way, you'll get a vapor lock in the tank, and fuel will stop flowing to the bowls on the carbs.
When the issue occurs again, stop immediately and open your gas cap - if you hear a little "whooshing" sound, like what you hear when you take off the gas cap on a car or truck that's running extremely low on fuel, like the sound of a release of pressure, then you need to check that vent hose, to verify it's not kinked... there are channels on the frame, that those two hoses run through when the tank is in place.

The other possibilities that immediately come to mind for a deal like that, would be a failing R/R (voltage regulator/rectifier), or gummed fuel/sediment mostly blocking fuel flow to the carbs.

An R/R that's on it's way out, will sometimes shut down when it gets hot, then, you wait a while and are able to start up and go again... but, when the R/R heats up again: repeat.

If the screen on your petcock tube, in the tank, is heavily blocked by gummed up fuel or sediment, or if there's something else impeding fuel flow between the tank and the carb bowls, this could let you run for a bit, but when the carbs bowls go empty, the motor dies... then fuel slowly trickles back in, and you can run again.
This last item would be the least likely thing I would suspect, but it is possible.

Good luck!

+1 on JNS.

I had the exact same thing happen to me on the first ride of the season. Turned out I had, although I was sure I didn't, a kink on the vacuum line. I pressed it until it straightened out, I heard a loud "PSSSSSSSSST" and then it ran perfectly (at least until I got a lot of other problems).

I've had the tank off and checked the screen, it's clean and the two hoses are missing. As far as it starting after cooling off, it hasn't ran since it cut off on him. Tomorrow will be the first real time I've had to wrench on it. Thought I'd check fuel first since it's easy and tomorrow I'll check fire.

I've been looking around and almost feel bad for the guy I only paid $400 for my F2. I don't feel like I can go wrong with putting in a little dough on this project.
