You could have the stator wires rewound as in having the old one rebuilt
something I never knew though about these - info plucked from an ST1100 forum thread
.leads me to believe maybe there's a better option when
we got to fix this problem - maybe DUB (CBR1988) knows a little about this & will
comment on when he's back in town !?

(ST1100 forum) Re: 28amp alternator same as cbr1000F
Everyone here that has this problem will usually retrofit a 40 amp from a '96 or newer 1100.

Here's a pic of the 1100 alternator
At first glance it's a gear driven alternator and looking at the shaft - maybe totally off in respect of what you'd need to run in a 1000F.
Maybe it CAN be done, but for me there'd be too much to change to make it work.
Prices are around 200 pounds for one - a good stator for a 1000F (cover only) I found for $50 in Californication
My question is - would it be worth the effort ?

Hey Sprock and Shadow, not knowing the specs, it would be a guess, but my thoughts go something like this.
The outer cover/housing look just like the CBR1000F alternator, just the 1100 alternator is gear driven and has a shorter shaft.
Having pulled mine to pieces completely to replace all bearings as well as the alternator damper - see photo below - it may be possible to press out the 1100 shaft and press in the 1000?
Cheers, SB
