Default camshafts and wat else??

For a serious hp gains..I think I read somewhere dat camshaft and cams are the way to go..Dun really noe wat these are anyway..LOL

My question is..If the owner decides to go with a camshaft mod on his 1000 rr, wat are the other component needed to execute this mod?? ie; with juz a camshaft can the mod be done or they need added springs or watever or watever or watever...blah,blah,b

Don't know about "serious" gains, but most race spec camshafts are worth 5-6rwhp, mostly all at the top end (10,000+rpm).
What all you need depends on what you get.

For Example, Erion Racing claims their cams are drop-in replacments. They keep the same profile etc, so you don't even need to re-shim the valves. You just buy them, install them and *poof* extra zip up top.

You also have:
Webcams
HRC Cams
Tornado Cams

HRC has several different versions as well... JSB, WSB, Enduro, etc...

Some will require valve springs and/or ECU to raise the rev limiter high enough to benifit from the new power curve.
You're gonna be looking at spending about $1000 for a set of cams... so if thats worth 5-6hp, go for it.
The first thing to do would be get a Full Ti Exhaust system. A good one (~$1200) will add 10-14hp AND save 10-15lbs. Thats alot more bang for the buck.

YOU REALLY only need to change cam shafts. Basically what your doing with the cam shaft is just changing the duration that the valves are open. (so if you get bigger cam lobes your just allowing more time for the valves to open to do there job.)

if you need any additional info let me know.

keep in mind an aggressive cam will take away from throttle response and low end torque. bigger is not always better. At least not in the car racing world

Mitsokid has it right. Cams alone will give you some top end, but take it away from the bottom and mid-range. If you go with higher lift cams, then you have to go with new springs. If you are looking for more top end and are investing the money into cams, you might as well get the head ported and polished. So not you've got more top end and even less bottom end (ever wonder why the race bikes are idling at 2500-3000 rpm?) To get some of the bottom end back, you have to add high compression pistons. That'll yield 3-6 hp throughout the whole range and give you back your lost bottom end. Now the high compression pistons will require race fuel to keep the engine from detonation.

If you're talking street use, top end is not going to help you with anything but bragging rights. Top end is for the track, and even then you don't use WOT that often.

If you want usable power for the street, go with a supercharger or turbo. It's cheaper and can give good results. Of course, there's always a nitro setup.
