I believe the manual only calls for 87 octane. when you use a higher octane than that you actually cause engine detonation which is not as cool as it sounds (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engine_knocking). there will be critics of this thinking of course, but that's what my chemistry teacher explained to me and that's how I think so it makes since to me.

Don't worry about the white smoke. If it was bluish then you probably looking at valve guide seals. but usually you get condensation when the bike cools down after a ride, more so when it is sitting over night. So at start up it is like steam you are seeing. You can smell and if you just smell a rich running bike and it goes away once the bike gets nice and hot then your just looking at water condensation. I thought the same thing before too!
